Needs Assessment & Referral

The Cancer Center of Santa Barbara social workers offer a variety of services, including: needs assessment, intervention, and referrals. Clinical social workers assess individuals with social, emotional, interpersonal, and socioeconomic issues.

Areas of assessment include, but are not limited to:

• Adjustment to chronic and catastrophic illness
• Adjustment to procedures and treatment
• Bereavement or adjustment to loss
• Ability to follow a medical regimen
• Cultural, religious, and language needs
• Family functioning and communication
• Mental illness, emotional distress, and depression
• Occupation or school performance
• Personal safety, including abuse, neglect, and violence
• Social and financial concerns
• Substance abuse

Social Work Interventions:

Interventions may be with patients, families, caregivers, doctors, or hospital or community personnel. Interventions may include, but are not limited to:

• Advocacy
• Case Management and Care Coordination
• Cognitive and behavioral therapy
• Consultation
• Counseling
• Crisis intervention
• Information and referral
• Relaxation and guided imagery
• Stress management

Social Work Referral:

Social work services are available to patients and the community through walk-in, scheduled appointments and referral. Self Referrals or Healthcare Professional Referrals may be made by phone or by emailing or faxing referral forms to the Support Services department. Bilingual staff are available.
